Kaniyoor PU College shines despite the odds
Mangaluru: Despite grappling with inadequate basic facilities and shared infrastructure with the high school section, Government Pre-University College, Kaniyoor, in Kadaba taluk, achieved remarkable academic success.
Shreevidya N, a student from this rural institution, secured the fifth rank in the state in the II PU science stream, making it the sole govt college among the top performers in the state. The college authorities highlight the need for an additional classroom to comfortably accommodate its 200 students, who have been consistently achieving over 95% results.
The college started in 1984, and provides education to rural students who come from about a 15km radius of the institution. Over the years, the PU college has been sharing infrastructure with the govt high school situated on the same campus. The college's two labs, staff room, principal's room and administrative office are situated in the high school section. There is a need for an independent building. Besides, there is a shortage of classrooms, and it is adjusted with high school infrastructure, said Jayanti K, principal of the college.
She said that the PU college is in need of additional classrooms, an auditorium, and labs for the science stream. "All facilities should be shifted to one building and made available to students instead of moving around to other blocks. The high school is implementing National Skills Qualifications Framework compliant vocational courses at the campus. If the number of admissions increases due to NSQF, the campus would need more classrooms," said Jayanti.
The college has only four full-time lecturers, supplemented by eight guest lecturers. The college consistently recorded over 95% results for the past five years. This year, out of 98 students who appeared for exams in the arts, commerce, and science streams, 92 passed, achieving a 94% pass rate. In the science stream, all 16 students passed, achieving a 100% result; in the arts stream, 32 out of 36 students passed, with an 89% result; and in the commerce stream, 44 out of 46 students passed, achieving a 96% result. According to Jayanti, the implementation of education department guidelines and special classes held in the morning and evening contributed to the improved results. Last year, science and commerce streams of the institution secured 100% results, while arts achieved 96% results.
